Part of my 31 for January set (a few favourite shots of 2013)
I find cutting the cake shots very difficult to capture anything interesting for my couples. There I said it.
They are such a traditional shot that people have been taking for so long that I'm not sure there is much that you can do with them. It's also the kind of shot that every wedding guest feels the need to take. So there isn't much emotion in them as they usually turn into a massive posing session with the bride and groom feeling quite awkward, while having to wait for Aunt Sally and Uncle Bob to take their photos.
What I love about this shot, is that it's just me and the bride and groom. I mean look at it. They are surrounded by people and not a single one is aware of them cutting the cake. They are all going about their business and totally oblivious. This for me makes an interesting image.
I can't help being captivated by the bride and groom, my eye's keep coming back to theirs. Any image that I can take for my clients that holds your gaze for longer than the usual wedding image is a success in my book.
