Part of my 31 for January set (a few favourite shots of 2013) This is the only pre wedding (aka engagement) shoot image that i've included in the 31 images for January. It's not that I didn't have any favourites, its just that I don't do pre wedding shoots often.
They are a great way for couples who are a bit unsure of the camera to have a test shoot before the wedding and for us both to discover what works and what doesn't. It's also a great opportunity to get to know couples and I really did have a blast hanging out with Tori & Joss in Brighton's Stanmer Park on a wet and dull spring day.
I think it can be quite daunting having your photograph taken on your wedding day. Your nerves are all over the place anyway and suddenly there is a photographer with the biggest camera you have ever seen, shoving it in your face. Often it's the very first time that people have had their photo taken by a professional so it can be quite daunting.
I've been doing this long enough now (I shot my first wedding back in 2005) and I teach other wedding photographers and specialise in portraiture when i'm not shooting weddings. So i'm pretty good at making people feel very comfortable in front of the camera and relaxing them pretty quickly. In fact I get complemented on what a calming influence I am during the bridal preparation stages.
However if people are still slightly nervous i'm more than happy to arrange a pre wedding shoot with them, just to help things out. After all i'm a photographer, i'd much rather be photographing people than stuck in front of a computer. It's also fun getting to know my clients a bit better before the big day and can produce better images on the wedding day as well.
